Hands off our rights!

This was our main message throughout 2022 to Doug Ford and his anti-worker government, who consistently held Ontarians down with legislation like Bills 124 and 28.

In response, Ontarians and their unions told Ford that enough is enough, and through public demonstrations, media conferences and even strikes, both Bill 124 and Bill 28 were defeated, putting your rights back where they belong – with you.

In 2022, I made it a priority to travel across Ontario to meet as many of you as possible, in as many places as possible. From big cities to small rural towns, it was a pleasure and an honour to not only get to meet so many of our incredible members, but to find new leaders who I know will make a strong impact in their workplaces, communities, and their union.

But no matter where I was, the struggles I heard from you remained the same. Your wages are not keeping up with inflation and you’re struggling to make ends meet. You’re working 12-16 hour shifts and it’s still not enough time to deliver the care your patients, residents and clients need and deserve. You’re burnt out and don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel.

In 2022, as the Ford government continued to not only ignore, but worsen the healthcare crisis in our province. Through it all, you’ve made countless selfless sacrifices to improve the lives of others, and I am forever grateful for all the contributions you’ve made to your communities and union this year.

Despite giving your all, you continue to not receive the respect, protection and pay you deserve, as just days before we turned the calendar over to 2023, Doug Ford announced he would appeal your victory over Bill 124 in an attempt to continue to restrain the wages of healthcare workers at a time when you’re losing to inflation and struggling to make ends meet.

Shame.

2022 was not an easy year for nurses on the frontlines, at the bargaining table, or in your personal lives. Yet, somehow, nurses always find a way to not only push through, but also fight back against injustice.

At the end of nursing week, despite the exhaustion and burnout many were feeling, hundreds of nurse leaders joined me to crash the doors as party leaders entered the final Leader's Debate of the Ontario provincial election.
