HANDS OFF OUR RIGHTS. This was our main message to Doug Ford and his anti-worker government. Ford's antics are finally in the spotlight, and Ontario is calling him out! From the very beginning, we have put pressure on him. Thankfully, we had two monumental victories this year after all our fighting: The repeal of Bill 28 (a notwithstanding clause to ban workers' right to strike) and the Superior Court ruling Bill 124 - the most racist and sexist bill capping workers at 1% - unconstitutional.
Instead of finally standing with workers, Ford has shamefully announced that they want to appeal the Superior court's decision and keep your wages capped at 1%. This is the kind of government we are up against - a government that wants to waste your money fighting legislation that's detrimental to your lives.
I know 2022 has not been easy for you. You are still dealing with COVID-19 and now more respiratory illnesses targeting children. Our health facilities are either overwhelmed, closing their doors or operating under unsafe conditions - putting you at risk every day. At the same time, you are dealing with the stress of inflation. This is why we made mental health one of our top priorities at the bargaining table. You need more support, and you need it now.
Bill 124 currently void, we can return to the bargaining table and reopen your contracts. Our legal teams and your SEIU family are diligently working towards negotiating the wage increases and benefits you rightfully deserve. But with the unpredictable nature of the Ford Government, we must always be on our toes, awaiting his next move. In 2023, we will be on the offence. We have big political plans on the horizon, and we need you to be ready to fight! We have seen firsthand how much Ford's government can affect your lives.
To all my SEIU leaders, this is your time to grab a few friends and co-workers and motivate them to stand with you. It has been my greatest honour to represent over 60,000 healthcare workers, and as much as I love speaking on your behalf, I need you to join me and use your voice. The public, your employer, and the government want to hear from you! This past year, we have witnessed how powerful we can be when people step up and be brave. As always, thank you for showing up every day and not giving up on your profession. You have truly made a difference in our healthcare system.
